The NFL is preparing a $100 million dollar "attack ad campaign over the next six months" in an effort to "force cable TV operators to carry" THE NFL NETWORK, according to MICHAEL McCARTHY of THE USA TODAY.
NFL NETWORK Communications Director SETH PALANSKY said that if cable providers do not agree to carry the net, the NFL "will urge consumers to switch to satellite TV operators that carry the channel."
The TV, radio and print campaigns, which "target cable operators by name, could begin as early as next week."
NFL NETWORK is currently in 41 million homes, and with the net carrying regular season NFL games this year, the league "thinks it has the leverage to force its way into 25 million more homes."
One ad aimed at TIME WARNER CABLE says,
"Don't let Time Warner ruin your football season."
Another one going after CABLEVISION says,
"Don't let Cablevision shut you out."
CARMEL GROUP Senior Analyst JIMMY SCHAEFFLER said
the NFL does not have "leverage with individual operators, but they have leverage where it counts the most -- with consumers. Who else gets in so many homes in less than three years?"
