(From The USA Today -- by Michael Hiestand)
CHRIS SCHENKEL, 82, died early Sunday in FORT WAYNE, INDIANA, after suffering from EMPHYSEMA for 20 YEARS and having surgery recently for A BLEEDING ULCER.
Schenkel, who began his TV career by calling HARVARD FOOTBALL in 1947, called NINE OLYMPICS -- anchoring THREE -- and about 100 EVENTS A YEAR for ABC in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
Schenkel said in 1997 that his on-air tack was AVOIDING CRUELTY --
"I never knowingly hurt or hated anyone."
[Does anyone else remember Chris Schenkel on ABC's WIDE WORLD OF SPORTS covering bowling? I do.]
