ABC Sees Decreased Overnight Rating For PISTONS/SPURS GAME ONE

(From Sports Business Daily)

ABC earned an 8.8/15 overnight NIELSEN RATING for its coverage of GAME ONE of the PISTONS/SPURS NBA FINALS Thursday night, down 24.1% from an 11.6/18 for PISTONS/LAKERS GAME ONE last year, but up 9% from an 8.1/13 for NETS/SPURS in 2003.

Thursday night's game posted a 42.9/58 in San Antonio, 2.9% higher than a 41.7/58 in the market for GAME ONE in 2003. GAME ONE drew a 35.6/52 in Detroit, 7.2% better than GAME ONE of the PISTONS/LAKERS series last year.

ABC's AL MICHAELS appeared on ESPN's PTI Thursday and said of ratings, "You can't control that stuff. The games will control the ratings, and I think this has the makings of a series that starts out okay but then as it builds and builds, if you get to a GAME SEVEN you'll do a phenomenal number. GAME SIX will do a real good number. It's like the WORLD SERIES. You start out, you build a base, the thing gets good (and) away you go."

In Miami, BARRY JACKSON notes ABC, which had started all FINAL games at 8:30 pm ET during the first two years of its NBA contract, "opted for
(9 pm ET) starts this year, because its research suggested that was the best time to attract the most viewers." But Jackson notes even Sunday's game starts after 9 pm ET and writes, "That West Coast/work issue is not a factor on weekends." When NBC aired weeknight FINALS games at
9:20 pm ET, "it had the decency to start Sunday games earlier, often at" 7:30 pm ET.
