TOM CRUISE's new girlfriend, KATIE HOLMES, is being tapped to play the actor's love interest in the third installment of MISSION IMPOSSIBLE.

SCARLETT JOHANSSON turned down the role, and this week LINDSAY LOHAN told a Los Angeles radio station she has read for the part and strongly implied it was hers. But, according to the NEW YORK POST, insiders say Holmes, 26, "will step up as the leading lady."

Katie Holmes can also be seen in this summer's upcoming BATMAN BEGINS out June 15th.
