F-Bomb May Be Blow To SNL, NBC

(From The New York Daily News -- By Adam Lisberg)

SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE has added another live foulup to its long history of unscripted flubs -- just as the toughening standards of broadcast decency raise the specter of more federal fines.

Guitarist DARON MALAKIAN of SYSTEM OF A DOWN screamed an unbleeped "F--- yeah!" as the camera zoomed in on him near the end of their musical performance Saturday night.

It wasn't the first SNL snafu involving the F-word; three actors have let it slip during sketches in the show's three-decade history, and singers have occasionally unleashed the expletive during late-night musical numbers.

But coming after JANET JACKSON's Super Bowl breast-baring incident last year and a FEDERAL COMMUNICATIONS COMMISSION (FCC) crackdown on indecent TV, the incident raised the possibility of trouble for NBC.

Neither NBC nor the FCC returned calls for comment but some fans on the SNL Web site worried what could happen next.

The show "should have canceled SYSTEM OF A DOWN. They bring these bands on live TV then they worry about possible fines," one fan wrote.

Added another, "SYSTEM OF A DOWN rocks! The guitarist was f----- right for sayin' it."

When SNL performer CHARLES ROCKET blurted out the F-word during a 1981 routine, he soon found himself fired. But when NORM MACDONALD uttered the expletive in 1997, NBC said it received two complaints and three calls of support.
