WALTER MURCH Describes Editing

(From The Avid Yahoo User's Group)

WALTER MURCH describes editing as part "plumbing" (workflow), "writing" (with the language of sound and images) and "performance" (feeling the natural rhythms of the material).

He explains that the term "editing" is probably inadequate and that the French term "montage" -- in the sense of constructing a product -- is closer to the fact.

[Murch left out the the therapist, psychologist, politician, mediator, etc. parts of editing. And the fact that no matter what anyone says -- some days you're going to feel more like a triage medic with a caffeine buzz and a color limiter than a "craftsperson." Or as a DP friend used to tell me -- "this one's for the meal and not the reel." Either that or "done is better than good." Wise words.]
