ESPN Shakes Up Schedule Around MNF

(From The USA Today)

For its second season of MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL (MNF), ESPN's road show won't be as elaborate.

Rather than swarming game sites with announcers for ESPN's hours of pregame hype, some on-air types -- including CHRIS BERMAN, MIKE DITKA, TOM JACKSON and CHRIS MORTENSEN -- will contribute to coverage from ESPN's Connecticut studios rather than traveling to game sites.

Also, with studio analyst MICHAEL IRVIN gone and RON JAWORSKI replacing JOE THEISMANN on game coverage, newcomers BILL PARCELLS and KEYSHAWN JOHNSON will appear (from Connecticut) on the Monday pregame show and also work a new two-hour weekly NFL show on ESPN RADIO on Friday nights.

STUART SCOTT will travel to the Monday Night Football site with STEVE YOUNG and new analyst EMMITT SMITH.

The network's Monday NFL coverage will start at 3:30 pm ET and continue through 2 am ET. Included will be SPORTSCENTER, MONDAY NIGHT COUNTDOWN and PARDON THE INTERRUPTION, which will still originate from the Monday Night Football city.

THEISMANN, departed from the MNF broadcast, is scheduled, for now, to have only a weekly ESPN.COM column and to call in to some ESPN RADIO shows.

Among the new NFL content ESPN is introducing is ESPNEWS FANTASY INSIDER with MERRIL HOGE and two analysts known more for their nicknames than real names -- MATTHEW BERRY (THE TALENTED MR. ROTO) and HOWIE SCHWAB (from STUMP THE SCHAWB).

The fantasy football analysis show will air Sunday mornings at 11 am.
