(From The Syracuse New Times -- By Molly English)You know you live in a small city when media types and basketball coaches can't shop in peace.
The scene at the DeWitt WEGMANS when the BOEHEIMS surf for salmon or MATT MULCAHY picks some produce can be downright silly.
Such is the price of fame in Syracuse.
[It's even more insane when WAYNE MAHAR heads out.]
MULCAHY has coopted on that celebrity -- such as it is -- by bringing his Web log, or "blog," off the WSTM-Channel 3 Web site and into THE PALACE THEATRE for a theatrical premiere.
Unlike some of the obviously arrogant talking heads on television, Mulcahy has been a success locally for years because of his pleasant demeanor, ready sense of humor and boy-next-door charm. Oh, and he's a pretty darn good journalist too.
THE LIVERPOOL HIGH SCHOOL and ITHACA COLLEGE graduate's knowledge of Central New York informs his reporting while he uses 20 years of experience to tell a good story both on camera and in MATT'S MEMO, his daily blog posted at WSTM.com and WSTQ.com.
A half-hour televised reading by Mulcahy of his blog that aired December 28th on Channel 3's sister station, WSTQ-Channel 6, seemed a natural to make the jump to the large screen.
So he's bringing an extended version of the program to the Palace on January 20th for a screening to benefit ARC of Onondaga.
"Last May when I had been writing the blog since October 2005 I was looking at the well over 100 stories and realized they were good stories I had put on the Web or emailed to people and I thought there must be a way to use them in another manner," Mulcahy explained.
