Jack-Of-All Trades MUSBURGER Thrives In Role At ABC/ESPN

(From The USA Today -- By Michael Hiestand)

BRENT MUSBURGER's career took some pretty big swerves.

Kids watching Musburger call ESPN2's coverage of the less-than-marquee Brigham Young/Michigan State men's basketball game Saturday -- or saw Musburger on soccer shows, Little League or IRL racing -- might not know he once starred on the NFL's dominant studio show.

He also routinely told viewers they were "looking live" at the top-drawer events such as THE NBA FINALS and NCAA MEN'S FINAL FOUR.

That was at CBS, which unceremoniously fired Musburger
the day before he called its NCAA Men's Basketball Final and signed off by telling viewers, "I'll see you down the road."

Musburger remembers that day telling his brother Todd, who's also his agent, "I'll go back to work next week."

The idea is simple -- "You just keep going. And in a curious way, ESPN has been a blessing -- they have so much product."

He cites HOWARD COSELL, who ended his career less of a star than he had been, as a cautionary tale.

"I kept telling Howard, 'Don't get consumed by what's going wrong with this industry, enjoy what's right.' He got so bitter. He could have had the greatest golden years in this business."

"People ask me what I like to do best," Musburger says.
"I always say, 'Whatever's next.'"
