(From The Hartford Courant -- By Rick Green)
A NEW YORK DEVELOPER who surrounds himself with HOLLYWOOD INSIDERS and talks in billions of dollars, thousands of jobs and grand hotels has crashed into a roadblock erected by a small town sandwiched between the world's largest casinos.
Some people are now worried that, in its zeal to consider every aspect of JOSEPH GENTILE's $1.6 BILLION UTOPIA STUDIOS PROPOSAL,
PRESTON, CONNECTICUT may shut the door on a blockbuster economic development opportunity that could benefit the entire state.
[Typical Connecticut.]
Gentile and his ever-growing posse of film industry executives say UTOPIA could bring MILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN MOVIEMAKING AND THOUSANDS OF JOBS TO CONNECTICUT.
[So of course we wouldn't want that! We have our sub-base now after all.]
Gentile's ASTONISHING -- some say UNBELIEVABLE -- vision for
12 STATE-OF-THE-ART SOUND STAGES, 2 MILLION SQUARE FEET OF INDOOR THEME PARKS AND HOTELS on the 400-acre site of the former NORWICH STATE HOSPITAL along THE THAMES RIVER is in danger of collapsing because local leaders are concerned about its SIZE and VIABILITY.
NEW YORK Film Producer MARK LIPSKY, who has THE NUTTY PROFESSOR and BEVERLY HILLS COP III on his resume, said the unusual RURAL LOCATION close to THE TALENT POOL in NEW YORK, BOSTON and other NORTHEASTERN CITIES makes UTOPIA distinctive.
[Looking for an editor anyone?]
But this is a leap of BIG-SCREEN PROPORTIONS, one that, if successful, could bring THOUSANDS OF JOBS, MILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN TAX REVENUE and A NEW INDUSTRY to CONNECTICUT -- or perhaps somewhere else in THE NORTHEAST if PRESTON balks.
