Theft Protection Is Illegal

(From Videography Magazine, June 2005 -- By Dick Reizner)

Sadly, I must ask you to ignore a recent tip.

In the APRIL COLUMN, I alerted you to a scheme whereby thieves look through your car's windshield, read the VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER (VIN) from the metal label on the dash and use it to have a duplicate key made.

To prevent theft, it would seem logical to cover the number. Logical, but apparently illegal.

I received emails from several friends in the LAW ENFORCEMENT AND EMERGENCY SERVICES VIDEO ASSOCIATION (LEVA) telling me about a federal law that prohibits covering the VIN. Sorry.
