IMUS -- Sorry, TOM's Not Gay

(From The New York Post -- By John Mainelli

DON IMUS apparently apologized Monday for a sidekick's on-air comments that actor TOM CRUISE is gay.

Although Imus' statement on WFAN (660 AM) sounded like a formal retraction, a spokesperson for INFINITY BROADCASTING declined comment on whether Imus had been forced by Cruise's lawyers to issue one.

"The other day SID (ROSENBERG) said something about Tom Cruise being a homo," Imus said, sounding as if he was reading from a prepared text.

"Sid meant it as a joke. We know that Tom is not gay," Imus said. Rosenberg was Imus' sportscaster until two weeks ago when he was dropped after a unrelated incident.

"We understand that, years ago, his first wife (MIMI ROGERS) said something about Tom wanting to keep his instrument pure. But she's made it clear since then that she was just joking," continued Imus, whose wake-up show is also carried by cable's MSNBC.

"So, I guess Tom's instrument is OK after all."

The box-office superstar has been dogged by rumors about his sexuality despite two marriages and a loudly-proclaimed current infatuation with actress KATIE HOLMES.

In a 1993 PLAYBOY interview, ex-wife Rogers said she and Cruise no longer had sex because he needed to "purify his instrument" so he could become a monk.
