Germ-Phobic Fliers Might Breathe Easier

(From The USA Today -- By Kitty Bean Yancey)

A new product aims to take off with fliers who worry about germs circulating in the cabin.

THE AIR RIGHT FILTER, due in airport stores July 1st and sold at airright.net (1-800-327-6151), attaches to the air vent over a seat. Its manufacturer says it renmoves "99.5% of bacteria and viruses from the passenger's personal air space." The reusable filter costs $7-9.

Is it what an expert in aviation medicine would prescribe?

"These filters may work well, but they're not actually necessary, because almost all modern aircraft already have (air) filters built in," says MICHAEL BAGSHAW, president of the AEROSPACE MEDICAL ASSOCIATION. He says a just-completed study for the EUROPEAN UNION found that air in pressurized cabins is cleaner than that in most public settings.

A filter, he adds, will "not protect you from the guy with a cold or influenza sitting next to you."
