(From Sports Business Daily)
Defending WIMBLEDON Men's and Women's Champions ROGER FEDERER and MARIA SHARAPOVA will wear "an exclusive golden version of the NIKE AIR ZOOM VAPOR SPEED during this year's tournament, according to THE USA TODAY.
The shoe's look "comes from material that contains 24-karat gold droplets" and appears on the all-white shoe "throughout the upper portion and on the back heel." The shoes are worth an estimated $500 a pair, and only 21 pairs were made. Federer and Sharapova will each get ten pairs to wear during the tournament, and NIKE's PR department has one pair "to provide to the media."
In Miami, MICHELLE KAUFMAN reports a two-story image of Sharapova "looms over WIMBLEDON VILLAGE." Also, Sharapova’s face "will grace the tag of every PRINCE RACKET and garment sold" at the tournament.
In Manchester, JAMIE JACKSON reported Sharapova earns $22.5 million annually from endorsements, making her "the world's highest-paid female athlete."
ANDRE AGASSI is the only tennis player to earn more. Sharapova's deals include COLGATE-PALMOLIVE, NIKE, PRINCE, MICROSOFT, HONDA, PEPSI-COLA, MOTOROLA, CANON, NEC, PARLUX, and TAG HEUER which has created 3,000 limited-edition diamond-encrusted MARIA SHARAPOVA model watches that cost $1,825 each.
Sharapova "readily describes herself as 'part athlete, part businesswoman' -- a rare explicit acknowledgement by a sports star that their corporate brand is as important as the game that made them."
