(From The USA Today -- By Michael Hiestand)
Networks are looking to use television coverage to build their other businesses -- like their web sites.
FOX SPORTS.com, with plenty of hype on FOX TV, used to draw about 80,000 votes to its weekly NASCAR polls. But it has drawn 8.4 million votes for 13 weekly polls -- drawing 1.04 million this week -- in ongoing online voting to determine NASCAR's SEXIEST DRIVER.
Driver DANICA PATRICK, racing in the BOMBARDIER LEARJET 500 on ESPN on Saturday night, is hot online. Search engine LYCOS, which tracks internet searches, says she's not only the web's most-searched athlete -- 645% above runner-up ANNA KOURNIKOVA -- but also is generating search numbers comparable to PARIS HILTON's and BRITNEY SPEARS'.
