(From The USA Today)
What chance do the NEW JERSEY DEVILS give a proposal that would give the pro hockey franchise a less demonic name? Think hell freezing over.
"I can assure you the DEVILS name will never change," team CEO LOU LAMORIELLO said.
State Assemblyman CRAIG STANLEY, A BAPTIST DEACON, is taking issue with the team's symbol.
"This is an age where symbolism is very important," said Stanley, whose resolution to rename the team is to be introduced in the Assembly at the end of June.
The team's name comes from the mythical JERSEY DEVIL, not the CHRISTIAN symbol of the antichrist. The mythical JERSEY DEVIL was said to terrorize people in the 18th century after being born to poor South Jerseyans and morphing into a dinosaur-like beast.
[Hockey's not going to be around for a long, long time, so does this really matter? Prioritize -- work on settling NHL strike first, name of team second.]
