ABC Closes Out NBA FINALS With 13.9/23 Overnight Rating

(From Sports Business Daily)

ABC earned a 13.9/23 overnight NIELSEN RATING for GAME SEVEN of the PISTONS/SPURS NBA FINALS Thursday night. The last time THE NBA FINALS went to a SEVENTH GAME was ROCKETS/KNICKS in 1994, when NBC earned a 20.2/33 overnight.

THE SAN ANTONIO MARKET earned a 51.6/67, while DETROIT posted a 49.1/68, both marking the highest local ratings of the series.

In SAN DIEGO, JAY POSNER notes that before this year, "only once since 1981 had THE FINALS not averaged at least a 10.2 rating." Entering last night's game, the average rating was a 7.6.

When asked during a conference call this week about this NBA RATINGS, FOX SPORTS President ED GOREN said, "If you look at the flip-flopping effect that took place five years ago -- with NASCAR becoming basically a network sport going from cable to network, at a time when the NBA, for whatever their reasons were, going from a predominantly network sport to a predominantly cable sport -- I think the numbers speak for themselves."

Meanwhile, USA TODAY's MICHAEL HIESTAND cites a PRICE WATERHOUSE COOPERS REPORT as projecting that the NBA's TV money will increase 11% in its next deals, which begin with the 2008-2009 season, and that NASCAR will get a 33% increase in its new deals that begin in 2007.
