(From Digital TV Magazine)
How stupid is this? I recently watched a network show in glorious HD, when the network cut to commercial, they were all standard def upconverted for HD. Now you might be thinking that I'm going to rant on the fact that some of those commercials were in SD letterbox and in HD they looked like a postage stamp with black all around the video.
But no, this is better.
One of the spots was for WAL-MART promoting -- HDTV. Yes! A commercial promoting the benefits of HD, placed in an HD show, but upconverted from SD.
What is WAL-MART saying here? "We'd love for you to buy an HDTV because HDTV is cool -- but not cool enough for us to shoot our commercials in?"
Or is it WAL-MART's ad agency that doesn't quite have all its neurons firing? "Let's do this HDTV spot in standard definition and not even ask the network if we can air it in HD."
Talk about your head in the sand.
