(From Sports Business Daily)
NBC earned a 5.9/14 for full-coverage of THE PREAKNESS STAKES from 5-6:45 pm ET Saturday, down 18.1% from a 7.2/16 in 2004. Race-segment coverage from 5:45-6:45 pm ET posted a 7.2/17, down 21.7% from a 9.2/20 in 2004. Pre-race coverage was down 8.7%, with a 4.2/10 compared to a 4.6/11 in 2004.
THE USA TODAY's MICHAEL HIESTAND writes, "TRIPLE CROWN TV means creating more than an hour of lead-in programming, involving a sport most viewers don't otherwise watch, and then capturing a couple minutes of what can be chaotic action. NBC's PREAKNESS coverage Saturday managed to do both well. While respectful of the event, NBC didn't oversell it as a matter of grim import."
