ROBIN ROBERTS Brings A Lot of Heart (And Height) To The Morning Anchor's Job

(From The New York Times -- By Felicia R. Lee)

"Who is ROBIN ROBERTS?" is the JEOPARDY question to this answer -- "She's a former college basketball star who, with DIANE SAWYER, makes up the only female co-anchor team for a major network morning show, GOOD MORNING AMERICA on ABC."

Amid all the noise about female newscasters -- ELIZABETH VARGAS's departure as evening news anchor at ABC,
KATIE COURIC's
ascension to anchor at THE CBS EVENING NEWS -- Ms. Roberts and Ms. Sawyer have, without much fanfare, become a team since CHARLES GIBSON left the program this summer to become anchor of ABC's WORLD NEWS, the evening news broadcast.

"I have to give kudos to ABC because it shows progress and was mostly under the radar," Ms. Roberts, 45, said of her pairing with Ms. Sawyer. "Some of the viewers are like,
'Girl Power!'"

CAROL JENKINS, a veteran broadcast journalist and president-elect of THE WOMEN'S MEDIA CENTER, an advocacy group, said, "For all the talk about competition between women, Diane and Robin clearly like each other and work well together."
