In the old days TURNER BROADCASTING SYSTEM (TBS) had a knack for getting by with little, using just one studio to host a pro wrestling match before swapping sets to, say, tape a show for CNN.
The space was so spare, actor CHARLTON HESTON once had to change his clothes in a restroom stall because he didn't have a dressing room.
"We really didn't have the right facilities," said TURNER veteran DAN DARLING.
Today, they do.
Turner has poured tens of millions of dollars into its studio operations, changing what was once an embarrassment into something opulent.
A huge new studio opened a few months ago, with another being finished for next year.
The spaces -- prominently topped by several floors of offices that remain under construction, all at a cost of about $88 million -- adjoin three other big studios that are only 5 years old.
The growth spurt eventually will boost Turner's studio space from what was once 5,000 square feet to 30,000, helping the company do more work in Atlanta, whether on DINNER AND
A MOVIE for TBS -- formerly taped in Los Angeles -- or halftime shows for TNT NBA THURSDAY.
"When we bring them into that facility, I think it blows their mind," Darling said.
