ABC Drops "TONIGHT" From "WORLD NEWS"

(From Reuters -- By Paul J. Gough)

After nearly three decades as WORLD NEWS TONIGHT,
ABC's nightly news broadcast has been renamed
WORLD NEWS WITH CHARLES GIBSON.

Since it signed on in July 1978, the ROONE ARLEDGE-created newscast has been known as WORLD NEWS TONIGHT through the terms of anchors FRANK REYNOLDS,
MAX ROBINSON, PETER JENNINGS, BOB WOODRUFF and ELIZABETH VARGAS.

But six weeks after Gibson took over as sole anchor, the name change was decided because it isn't just about the evening news anymore.
