(From The Philadelphia Inquirer -- By Gail Shister)
NBC is getting serious about wooing THE VIEW's MEREDITH VIEIRA to replace TODAY star KATIE COURIC if, as expected, she joins CBS.
NBC NEWS executives have had several meetings with Vieira recently, and her longtime agent, MICHAEL GLANTZ, has been spotted frequently at NBC's ROCKEFELLER PLAZA headquarters, according to highly placed industry sources.
The sources spoke on condition of anonymity because negotiations with Couric are at a delicate stage.
Smart money, however, says that Couric will accept CBS czar LES MOONVES' offer to become solo anchor of THE CBS EVENING NEWS after her NBC deal expires at the end of May.
Contractually, she must notify NBC of her decision by
May 10th, the sources say.
Though she's been out of the daily news game for nine years, Vieira, 54, is said to top NBC's wish list for TODAY.
Her name was first pitched by TODAY co-anchor MATT LAUER, industry sources say.
