(From The Yahoo Avid User's Group)
I've been watching some of the Olympics here on SD
COX analog cable. Some of the time delay events look awful with plenty of artifacts (snowboard pipe in particular).
Others viewing on COMCAST and TIME WARNER digital cable have mentioned the same thing. They've also noticed a weird luminance halo -- a moire, all sorts of nasty stuff.
Very distracting.
It seems to me the pictures were better 10 years ago.
One reason for some of the artifacting is that ALL the event feeds from Torino are 1080i/50. NBC takes them in as 50 and has to standards convert them to 1080i/59.97. The host country controls/manages all video/audio feeds and Italy, being a 50 hz video country used 1080i/50.
It definitely looks like a mixture of bad transmission and bad compression back here in the United States.
KEN SIRULNICK, who is in Italy freelancing for NBC, notes the HD actually looks good over there. However, a couple of events are still SD.
