In attempting to explain what an alpha channel is the other day
I ended up passing down an oral history involving an art stand camera, white copy paper and Sharpies to composite news graphics back in the stone ages.
Don't laugh at this.
I once had a client who wanted a "cool" look for titles.
All the power of a CHYRON MAX wasn't cutting it for them.
So, I used white out, hand painted on black construction paper, shot on a camera stand with 18db of gain.
It provided "just what they wanted, very organic and very fast."
Another organic effect was to display video in a monitor which was reflected into on a pan of water and shot with a camera. The ripply's were cool when a droplet hit the water.
Of course, you had to invert the picture through a DVE for correct viewing.
The spot was for a Top 40 radio station in the mid-1980s.
