It's Not A Flaw, It's A Feature

(From The Yahoo Avid User's Group)

I read a little blurb in an online HD newsletter I receive and loved this part of an article talking about HDV's uses in the current market.

"Our newest feature, used the lightweight camera and its inherent limitations in dealing with highly saturated colors and bright lights. We embraced the resulting artifacts and jerky camera movements as an integral part of the aesthetic. The blooming lights and unusual color palettes resulted in a film that looked unlike any other."

I think the next time a producer tells me to fix a drop-out or color correct a shot I'll just tell them we should "embrace it, not fix it."

Maybe I've discovered a new QC category -- Embraceable Errors.

Perhaps I could patent the idea?

As DILBERT once said, "Any bug that's documented is a feature."

At some places, that's also referred to as "an acceptable level of half-assed."

[Okay, so maybe it's not a flaw. Maybe the camera's limitations need to be embraced. All I ask is -- will the camera receive the appropriate credit for ART DIRECTION when the project wins an EMMY?]
